FOR SALE SPARTAN ROADSTER ROVER V8 3.5lt

car

Spartan Roadster Rover V8 3.5lt

Correctly registered as a Spartan on the V5.  First registered 1980.

Spartan chassis, Rover P6 engine with SD1 heads and composite head gaskets.  SU HS6 carbs with chrome air filters.  Aluminium Morgan wings.  Automatic but could be changed to manual gearbox.  Triumph front suspension, Ford Capri 3lt rear axle with anti-tramp bars.  Coil over adjustable shocks all round.  New Cobra Cub seats.  Wire wheels.  New dashboard last year.  Heater.  Electric fan.  Brand new hood never fitted.  Stainless twin exhausts, tubular manifolds.

MOT until July 2011, taxed till end September.

Very rare, I’ve only ever seen one other V8 Spartan.

Bad points:  a couple of cracks in the paint on off side front wing, nearside front wing has a small scrape in it.  Overall the paintwork is excellent.  Needs re-carpeting really as the original has faded and is green anyway!  The speedo has stopped working, needs a new cable.

Personalised number plate not included.

£3500 ONO

FOR SALE

I have a Spartan which I now wish to sell, registration number TSL 651 registered as a Triumph 2 - Axle - Rigid Body Sports 1998cc, (Historic Vehicle). I have the original plans for the vehicle from The Spartan Car Co. Mapperley Plains Road, Nottingham and the original Spartan instructions. An original A4 size hard cover brochure, I have a letter from who I presume was the original owner (G. Buckley) to Mr J. McIntyre dated 20/11/1975. An original letter from Spartan Cars to a Mr Osmond informing him of the new address of the company posted 30/05/1978 and an original A4 sheet of the cost of a Spartan with effect from 7/06/1981. I have had the vehicle for about nine years all the panels have been removed, striped of  the seven layers of paint and are now back to aluminium. All the parts are there to rebuild the car. I also have quite a few photos of the vehicle.

FOR SALE

UNFINISHED SPARTAN TREKA KIT - ROLLING CHASSIS. ALL PANELS AND OTHER KIT PARTS INLCUDED.
SORN'D, VEHICLE REGISTERED ON V5 AS FIESTA CONVERTIBLE.

V5 details were changed as per the Spartan recommendation, DVLA were notified that the vehicle had been re-bodied to a Fiesta Convertible, with the original registration retained as NCW 823 T. The V5 was altered in 1989 with my father as the new owner, with a change in body type (2 door hatchbanck to 2 door convertible) and colour from red to yellow notified to DVLA.

Unfortunatley, the kit was never finished beyond rolling chassis stage, and so was never MOT'd or re-taxed when the MOT and excise license expired.

We were instructed by Spartan that the car could be re-taxed at any time by taking all documents to the local DVLA office, (after MOT), and applying for a new disc wit the V5, MOTasnd insurance documents.

FOR SALE

A bare Spartan bodyshell on a 1968 vitesse chassis has come my way.
Hood/frame,windscreen/frame,doors/windows,radiator housing and badge, bonnet halves and hinge, front and rear wings/running boards, lights, body tub and rear box are all present along with some other odds and sods, but no mechanical parts. I would like it gone fairly quickly in one lump if possible. Are you aware of anyone who might be interested. The car is situated just north of Bristol. There is some paperwork with the car including an old MoT as a Spartan,a registration plate and a V5 in the post (hopefully).

The End of the Spartan Tale 22 May 2008

In February 2007 I was reasonably content having just submitted to Mary the Ed an article entitled “A Spartan Tale”. I was also just entering my second year of retirement.

For years I had been telling anyone who would listen that when retirement came along I would not be bored as I would be restoring my kit car. I was looking forward to thumbing my nose at the D.V.L.A as I would not have to pay road tax. I was under the impression that cars over 25 years old were exempt. That was the first blow. It transpired (as no doubt everyone else knows) that cars built prior to 1973 were exempt, mine was registered in 1981. Oh dear me I thought, or something like that I will just have to save up.

As a retirement gift I had bought myself a Honda Accord 2.4 Ex Automatic which I parked as usual on the drive at the front of the house.

We have a tandem garage with the laid up Spartan at the back and with my wife’s Clio at the front.

Our contentment was shattered one Friday night in February when some local villains decided that they rather fancied the Accord without paying for it. The front door glass was smashed in but they couldn’t get past the vestibule door. The security on modern cars is such that they were obviously after the keys. The days of hot wiring are gone.

The outcome of this very harrowing experience was that the Accord ended up in the garage and my wife’s Clio is on the drive with the Spartan alongside it covered with a tarpaulin.

The garage is not long enough to accommodate the Accord and the Spartan, (maybe I should have got the two seat model instead of the 2+2).

I have pondered the problem for the last 15 months even to the point of selling the Honda and finally regretfully decided that the Spartan will have to go.

As my good wife says “You wanted to build your own car and did, so now let it go”.

Therefore

For sale Spartan 2+2 fitted with a Vitesse 2000cc engine. The car is a one owner vehicle having been built by myself (Project Engineer now
retired) and first registered September 1981. The car was in continuous use from registration up to September 1984 when it was taken off the road and put

into dry storage until last year. Approx 15000miles were covered during the period.

The donor vehicle was a 1968 Vitesse 1600cc although very little of that car remains, the wiring loom and steering rack, (it was new) and a few instruments.

The car has a steel box section chassis supplied by Spartan which was internally wax-oiled and rust-proofed before assembly.

The engine is 2000cc which was stripped down and completely rebuilt after a re-bore and crank re-grind. A new oil pump was also fitted. The differential is from a Mk 1 2000cc.car. The brakes were all upgraded to 2000cc spec and a servo was added.

The twin Stromberg carburettors were new. The car is obviously requiring some work having not turned for 24 years. The carb’s were removed for cleaning and the exhaust manifold was removed for painting, the intention being to restore the car.

I could go on but I don’t intend to. I did write about the car in the April 2007 edition of the Spartacus magazine under the heading “Spartan Tale”. The article also appeared on the club website until it was somehow “lost”.

Offers in the region of £500 will be considered. There is a genuine reason for the sale.

Various spares are available, overdrive gearbox, new camshaft complete with new followers, new valve compression springs, full engine gasket sets, speedometer, rev counter etc.

If any more information is required then please contact me.
